The Commonwealth

Welcome to

You may think you know The Commonwealth, as it has been a landmark hotel in Richmond for over 110 years. And much of what we have been known for—excellent service, spacious suites, and a location that can't be beat—remains. But we have totally reinvented ourselves, and now offer a uniquely Richmond experience. From the tattooed entrance doors on our suites (did you know that RVA is the 3rd most tattooed city in America?), to furniture and art hand crafted from some of the area's most talented artisans, to java from Richmond's own Carytown Coffee, The Commonwealth will surprise and delight you at every turn.

Historic + Modern

Historic landmarks such as The Commonwealth contribute to Richmond's authenticity, a city that embraces its artistic and creative side while maintaining a deep love for its historic roots. Upon staying at The Commonwealth you will see that we honor both. The over century-old stone consoles, wrought iron balustrades, and decorative friezes that embellish our Classical Revival style building are preserved, while the hotel's interior is adorned with the creations of local muralists and tattoo artists who decorated our guestroom corridors and the entrance doors of our 59 suites. We are eager to share the history of our hotel with today's travelers, and are proud of the property's induction to Historic Hotels of America.

Location = Prime

The Commonwealth is located directly across from the Virginia State Capitol building, and the beautiful Capitol Square Park. But that's just the beginning—our hotel is within walking distance of the city's financial district, the state and federal court buildings, Library of Virginia, VCU Medical Center, Dominion Energy Center, Main Street Station, Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom, the city's historic riverfront and Canal Walk, and a variety of live entertainment and dining options.

Art + Tattoos

In recent years, Richmond has developed a strong street art culture, with works from nationally renowned muralists permeating the streetscape. To honor this, we feature original murals on each of our guestroom floors, painted by many of these same talented artists. In our lobby, we feature original artwork either painted by a local artist, or capturing a local subject. And to pay tribute to Richmond's status as the 3rd most tattooed city in the country, the door of every guest suite was “inked” with the suite name and an image that evokes the city by Charles Berger (an authentic tattoo artist in Richmond; check him out at www.twopillarstattoo.com).

Testimonials

"The room is really a suite with a sitting room and separate bedroom. The room is spacious, bed comfortable and great value for the price. The location is across the street from the Virginia State Capitol Building and there are restaurants close by."

"Booked last-minute on a road trip through the corridor. Room was much larger than expected and clean. Highlight was breakfast however. James in the kitchen/dining area was the kindest and friendliest cook and waiter ever! I hope this makes its way to the folks that take care of him. Thank you James!"
